Building Confidence, Character & Purpose with SU Algoa

The Impact of the PLP Leadership Camp

From 4–6 October, the Practical Leadership Programme (PLP) hosted an unforgettable Leadership Camp at Camp Rhino, bringing together young leaders from across our community for a weekend of growth, learning, and connection.

The camp was made possible through the generous support of our partners and funders — and the impact was nothing short of inspiring. Designed to equip youth with practical tools for leadership, every moment reinforced the PLP’s core values of confidence, character, and purpose.

The camp kicked off with a high-energy Amazing Race, where teams tackled challenges, solved problems, and learned the value of perseverance and teamwork. From deciphering clues to hunting for “elephants” hidden along the route, it was a fun and creative reminder that leadership is a journey that takes both heart and strategy. Throughout the weekend, participants engaged in practical sessions on collaboration, communication, and self-leadership. Guest speakers shared powerful personal stories of resilience and purpose — inspiring everyone to see leadership as service and growth.

Sessions on Group Dynamics encouraged teamwork and empathy, while the Leader in Me sessions — based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People — guided participants to explore how effective leadership begins from within.

Each young person also took part in Personality and Leadership exercises to discover their strengths and unique leadership styles. The theme of Emotional Safety added a vital layer to the weekend, helping to create a space of openness, respect, and mutual understanding.

Moments to Remember

A highlight for many was the spectacular fire dancer performance on the first evening — an unforgettable display of courage and creativity (and a friendly reminder not to try this at home!).

Participant feedback captured the spirit of the weekend beautifully:
“I enjoyed learning new leadership skills.”
“The guest speakers were amazing!”

Building Future Leaders Together

The 2025 PLP Leadership Camp reminded us all that leadership is not about titles — it’s about growth, self-awareness, and purpose-driven influence. As our young leaders returned home, they carried with them new habits, fresh confidence, and a renewed vision to lead positively in their schools and communities.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to every partner, donor, and volunteer who made this camp possible. Together, we’re shaping the next generation of leaders who will make a lasting impact in their world.
