Once it became clear that schools would close again for a short period, I had the idea that if all students were off school for a few weeks, it might be nice to run an holiday Club online to reach them during the time the schools were closed again. A team came together including staff from across the country and a plan was made. We chose the theme Eye of the Storm, which turned out to be appropriate for me for reasons I will explain later. Each of us was allocated roles and my role was to do the talks. And the story begins. On the evening before the Holiday Club started, I began having severe chest pains and was struggling to breathe and rushed to hospital, where I spent the night having tests and being checked out before being released at 4am. Yet by the time Holiday Club began I was able to do the talk online and actually found myself feeling fine for the duration of the Holiday Club. Though it might not have seemed it, God was in Control of what He wanted to happen. We saw this again on Day 3. As our leaders meeting was about to start, load shedding began. Kind of a big deal, when it is all online, so you need internet access and your computer is due to play the songs and do the talk, but has no battery life left! But God was prepared for this too – on day 1 due to a slow internet connection I had purchased mobile data. We had not needed it that day, but God knew that we would need it on Day 3 and made a plan in advance! But what about a computer? I pondered going home, then bumped into a friend who lent me his. But the story does not end there. Windows decided to do an update as his computer restarted, so we were left waiting for it to load, not knowing if it would do so in time! Yet God gave me a peace about it and a faith that it would all be sorted in time for us to do the songs and talk. So I was able to sit and wait in peace and pray that all would go well. Time ticked by and it was still updating. The programme had already started and it was getting close to the time for the song. Literally just before we were due to do the song in the programme, it completed and we were able to load all the programmes needed and start the song, literally just in time. And all went amazingly well with the whole programme. Throughout the whole time of holiday Club I was feeling tired in the mornings, due to a recent illness, but God gave me strength and energy for the duration of the programme, such that I felt completely normal for that period of time.
Now let me tell you what the three messages that I was speaking on were. 1. God is in control. 2. God will give you strength. 3. Prayer Works. I think God taught me a lesson about this through my experiences during the week of holiday Club! 😉
Prayer was not always my first resort, I remember having the chest pains and phoning one person to get advice, then another to get a lift to the hospital and only when I phoned the third, did they pray. Sometimes we forget that prayer makes a difference, but I thank God that he is still in control in every situation and gave me peace and strength to play my part in making this holiday Club a huge success.
All the children who came enjoyed it and wanted to come back another time. I was particularly encouraged by these two comments from two children about what they had learned. “What I learned this week is that in whatever challenge I face I can make it through” and “God is higher than any other and he can give us strength to do anything.”
