Towards the end of June 2015 myself and seven other people came out from SU in UK to Scripture Union Western Cape to be involve with local holiday clubs and the Froggy Camp. Two other team members and I were involved in the holiday bible club ran by Bettaway Community Church in Delft, Cape Town with around 400 children attending. During our time at this club our team started to discuss how leadership development and discipleship could happen with the holiday club leaders so that they, in turn, could develop and disciple others.
The rest of the UK team were part of a girls’ camp at Froggy and here similar observations were made, and conversations of how to help the leaders implement best practice, whether it is in teaching bible stories, memory verses, leading games or prayer and worship. In these conversations between SU Western Cape and the UK team an international partnership between SU England and Wale and the Western Cape started to form, seeking to see how we can share ideas, inspire, support and encourage one another in our ministries.
For the second time we brought another team out to SU Western Cape in July 2016 again to assist with holiday bible clubs and Froggy Camp. The relationship between Bettaway Community Church and SU developed with a staff member from the UK being placed in the holiday club to mentor some of the young leaders throughout the week.
During the planning of the second trip we began to explore what it might look like for a person from the UK to come out and join SU Western Cape for a longer period than just a couple of weeks. In this period, I was sensing a call on my life to develop young leadership and to develop existing ministries. From this point we explored the possibilities of me joining the SU Western Cape staff. After much prayer and consideration, we both felt this was God’s will for my life and the work of Scripture Union Western Cape. It has been amazing to see God’s hand at work and provision in seeing this vision and calling come to fruition.
